10 Amazing Facts About Indian Constitution That You Probably didn't know...!
Indian Constitution also known as Bhartiya Samvidhaan is the supreme law of India.
It was drafted by the Constituent Assembly, and it was implemented under the Cabinet Mission Plan on 16 May 1946.
On 29 August 1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to prepare a Draft Constitution for India.
After several discussions, debates, and amendments between the members of the constitution assembly, it was finally finalized and adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and became effective on 26 January 1950.
The constitution replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the country's fundamental governing document, and the Dominion of India became The Republic of India.
Now, let's discuss the facts about the Indian Constitution.

Fact #1 - The blessing of 1000 years...!
The Constitution was something that has to be preserved for over many years. It has to be passed to our descendants as it was originally written by our leaders.
So, the members of the constitution assembly have decided to write it somewhere from where we could easily give it to our younger generation as a "heritage".
Thus, it was decided to write on parchment sheets which have measurements of 16 by 22 inches and have a lifespan of 1000 years!
Fact #2 - The Constitution Day
On the 26th of November, every year Constitution Day is celebrated.
It is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of the final constitution by the Constitution Assembly.
On this day, in the year 1949, the constitution was adopted and it came into force on 26th January 1950.
Fact #3 - The World's Best Constitution
Indian Constitution is referred to as the world's best constitution as it was amended very few times. It has covered all aspects of the life of a common man, therefore, letting people have a good life.
It was amended only around 94 times in 60 years and 104 times in 72 years...!
Fact #4 - The Man Who Calligraphed it...
Prem Behari Narain Raziada was the man who hand wrote the original constitution of India in a flowing italic style with beautiful calligraphy.
It was such an eloquent writing that no one could say that it was handwritten by a man.
The last page of the constitution bears his name and it reads this- Calligraphed by Prem Behari Narain Raizada (Saxena). S/o Shree Brij Behari Narain Raizada of Delhi.
Fact #5 - Socialist, Secular and integrity were also added
In 1976, after 27 years of adopting the constitution, the government led by Indira Gandhi passed the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976, during the Emergency.
The government made these changes to show that the Indian Constitution implies social and economic equality to its citizens.
Though, while drafting the constitution, Ambedkar was against adding secularism because it was inherent to the Constitution’s basic structure and he felt that mentioning it in the preamble would be redundant.
Fact #6 - Stored in helium case
Very few people know that our constitution was written in two languages ie. Hindi and English.
And after the completion of writing and insertion of signatures of all the 284 members of the constitution assembly, it was properly stored in helium case which is now in the library of the Parliament of India.
Fact #7 - The Bag Of Borrowings
The constitution-makers wanted to write a constitution that upheld the fundamental rights of citizens as well as our historical perspective, geographical diversity, cultural and traditional characteristics
So they read several constitutions of the world and borrowed many features of theirs as well as maintaining its salient features.
This was the reason it was many times also referred to as "Bag Of Borrowings".
Fact #8 - One Drawing of the constitution says a million words...!

The members of the constitution assembly wanted to make our constitution, not just a written document but also wanted to illustrate a whole lot of history by a number of paintings.
So they called artists from Shantiniketan including Rammanohar Sinha and Nandalal Bose who made drawings of Lord Krishna, Arjun, Nataraj, Hanuman, etc.

Fact #9 - The Adoption of National Symbol & National Motto
The adaptation of Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath, a statue from 230 BCE, was adopted as the National Emblem of India on 26 January 1950, the day India became a republic.
And also, the words "Satyameva Jayate" from Mundaka Upanishad, meaning 'Truth Alone Triumphs', are inscribed below the abacus in Devanagari script and eventually became the national motto of our nation...
Thus the Natural Symbol and Natural Motto were adopted on the same day when the final constitution was taken.
Fact #10 - "We, The People..."

The Preamble of the Indian Constitution was heavily inspired by the Preamble of the American Constitution.
The starting lines say "We, the people of India... " in the same way as American Preamble begins with "We, the people of United States...". This line indicates the ultimate sovereignty of common citizens of any democratic country.
These were a few major facts... but there is also a whole lot waiting to be uncovered!
Some more informative and astonishing facts about the Indian Constitution are:-
1) The first meeting of the members of the constitution assembly took place on 9th December 1946.
2) Altogether, there were total 11 sessions held covering over 165 days to completely draft the constitution in which around 53,000 people participated.
3) The original manuscript of the constitution weighs around 4 kilograms...!
4) B. R. Ambedkar was called 'The Father Of Indian Constitution' since he was the chairman of the Drafting Committee.
5) It took almost 2 years 11 months and 17 days to finalize the constitution.
6) The Hindi version of the original manuscript of the constitution was calligraphed by Vasant Krishan Vaidya. He was working in a room in Constitution Hall. He completed the writings over the course of 6 months.
7) Jawaharlal Nehru is often attributed to the author of the constitution.
